Justwalkover: What is the qualification required to become Structural Engineer?

Anand A: To become Construction Structural Engineer is necessary to possess a Bachelors of Civil Engineering (BE) or structural engineering.

Justwalkover: What are the technical skillsets required?

Anand A: AUTO CAD and RC CAD. Along with this one need to good at IT and Mathematics.

Anand A: Communication, Coordination, Creativity, Commercial awareness, Team building skills, Problem solving skills and Analytical skills.

Anand A: This profession offers huge scope for challenge, variety and creative satisfaction. So, professionally, structural engineering can be hugely rewarding.

Anand A: By the very nature of the work, contracts are often short term allowing for variety and new challenges on a regular basis.

Often working closely with architects, structural engineers are involved at every stage of a project as they use their creativity and innovation to come up with sustainable solutions to some of the greatest challenges we face, including climate, change. Position entails a large amount of responsibility, it can be stressful.

Justwalkover: What kind of career progression one will have?

Anand A: I was promoted to be structural coordinator due to my hard work and sincerity .And yes I believe we can progress our career from this field. Many structural engineers progress to become project managers. Some choose to specialize in a specific area of structural engineering. For instance, some may choose to work with buildings constructed from one particular sort of material. Some structural engineers choose to adopt a less practical approach and becoming a lecturer in engineering provides the perfect opportunity to remain involved in the industry.

Justwalkover: What would be the starting salary range?

Anand A: 2.10 lac per Annum.

Justwalkover: Is this job role demands overtime or shift? What is the working pattern?

Anand A: Yes, it does, because we mainly deal with overseas projects and over there Sunday is a working day and we may have to come on weekends here and even night we may have to come, it all depends on the deadline of submission. Normal timings are 9 am to 6 pm from Monday to Saturday.

However, individuals will need to be prepared to work overtime and visit sites at short notice. If a building or structure is in danger of collapsing, structural engineers will need to travel to the site as soon as possible. For this reason, travel is a common feature of the job and overseas trips are a standard feature.

Anand A: A structural engineer is responsible for designing any kind of structure so that it can fulfill a specific purpose, and remain safe, economic and functioning throughout its intended lifetime. Structural engineering is about investigating both the immediate loads and demands on the structure, as well as any likely future changes, and ensuring a structure is designed to withstand those loads.

As well as designing new builds, structural engineers also ensure older structures remain safe, and often design refurbishment schemes to ensure a long life for existing structures.

Structural engineers design, plan and oversee the construction of new buildings and bridges, or alterations and extensions to existing properties or other structures.

Tasks include:

  • Preparing reports, designs and drawings
  • Making calculations about loads and stresses
  • Selecting appropriate construction materials
  • Providing technical advice
  • Obtaining planning and/or building regulations approval
  • Liaising with relevant professional staff
  • Monitoring and inspecting work were undertaken by contractors
